Music mogul Simon Cowell has expressed frustration with Zayn Malik, saying the singer should have consulted him before agreeing to a TV show.

Malik, 23, is reported to be teaming up with producer Dick Wolf and Universal Television for a TV drama about a boy band thrust into the spotlight.

The scripted work is called Boys and is inspired by One Direction – the boy band Cowell created with Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Niall Horan.

Earlier this week, Malik was quoted in The Hollywood Reporter as saying: “Dick Wolf is a legend and the opportunity to work with him … to create a compelling drama series is awesome.”

Wolf is the writer and producer behind the long-running Law & Order TV series.

But Cowell told Entertainment Tonight: “I think he should have come to me with it, if I’m being honest with you.

“Nothing surprises me anymore.

“I do actually believe that when they’ve got these ideas, bearing in mind where we started, they should actually come to me.”

Cowell said he should have been involved in the TV series, adding: “I like everyone who’s got ambition but I’m not going to lie – there’s always a part of me that thinks they should give it to me.”

One Direction was created after the five boys auditioned as solo acts on talent show The X Factor.

Cowell brought them together and signed them to his label Syco, launching them onto the world stage.

But Malik quit last year to go solo, finding some success but also struggling with what he has described as “extreme anxiety”.

Earlier this week he announced he was pulling out of an appearance in Dubai, saying he did “not feel sufficiently confident” to do the October show.
