Kimmel reveals 'shockingly small' Oscars salary

Late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel has revealed how much he will be paid to host the 2017 Academy Awards in February.

The 49-year-old presenter said on a CBS radio show that he will receive just $ 15,000 (£12,000) for the event.

It’s not bad for a night’s work, but the “shockingly small amount” does seem paltry for a ceremony known for giving gift bags worth hundreds of thousands of pounds to its nominees.

When asked about the reason behind the surprisingly low figure, Kimmel said: “You know why? I think it’s illegal to pay nothing.”

He added: “I’m not sure I was supposed to reveal this. But nobody told me not to. I consider this their fault.”

Kimmel hosted the Emmy Awards in 2012 and 2016.

His selection as host for the 89th Academy Awards was announced two weeks ago by the ceremony’s producers, who waited longer than usual in naming the presenter.

When asked about the delay, Kimmel suggested he might not have been first choice.

“They asked like 14 people and they all said no and then there was me. I absolutely was surprised,” he said.

Speaking on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he said: “The producers and the Academy went through a long list of names, and in the end, they decided that – since I am already right across the street from where they do the show – I was the closest person to host.”

Chris Rock returned to the job for this year’s event, having first hosted in 2005.

Ellen DeGeneres took to the stage in 2014, followed by Neil Patrick Harris the following year.
